Consumer Unit Upgrades
Having an up to date fuse box (consumer unit or fuse board) is a major part of ensuring your electrics are safe and up to standard. Upgrading your consumer unit will bring your electrical installation up to current standards and improve your home electrical safety dramatically.
In the UK many homes are still equipped with an old style fuse box or a one that does not comply with the current regulations.
In January 2015, IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671) Amendment 3 will be published. A major change in Amendment 3 concerns consumer units, the term for a modern day domestic fuse box. New regulation 401.1.201 will state that in domestic environments, consumer units and similar switchgear must be constructed from non-combustible material.
New consumer units should be installed using single RCBO breakers, providing individual protection to each circuit. This provides better protection to the circuits and greater safety to you.
At Denholm electrical we will not fit split load boards or consumer units that do not comply with the latest regulations. Surge protection will also be fitted as standard providing extra protection to your circuits.
By complying with the latest regulations and ensuring your property is safe, you’ll ease your conscience, and benefit from better peace of mind – safe in the knowledge that things are safe and correct.
The costs of replacing a consumer unit can vary greatly as it will depend on many factors such as which type of consumer unit is needed, the number of circuits required and how old the exiting installation is. It would be recommend to carry out a test of the property and a survey to see if any other work is needed to be carried out before we upgrade the consumer unit.
